Game 1 Game 2
Seven of the eight qualifying teams for next weekend's Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament have been set. One spot remains for which two teams are still eligible. Those teams are UW-Parkside and Drury, and they just happen to be playing each other to close the league's regular season on Sunday, May 2.
The Rangers will host Drury in a doubleheader at noon. See standings: http://www.glvcsports.org/index.aspx?tab=softball&path=softball
Parkside kept itself in contention with a twin kill of the Rockhurst Hawks, 2-0 and 6-5, at UWP on Saturday.
Kallie Walczak threw a two hitter to win the opener. She struck out 10 and walked two.
Parkside tallied both of its runs in the home half of the sixth inning in the brisk 75-minute game.
After the first two batters were out, Krista Kelly walked. Bridget Walters came in to run for Kelly. Amy Horn tripled off the right field fence to chase Walters home. Alyssa Wilson then singled to score Horn.
Stephanie Luska, Christine Holthus and Wilson each had a pair of hits in the seven-hit attack.
It was a different tone which was set for Game 2, as each team scored three times in the first inning. The score was tied at 5-5 when the Rangers pushed one across in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single to left-center off the bat of Nicki Ekstrom.
There were some tense moments in the top of the seventh inning. The Hawks had runners at the corners with nobody out. Jessica Bryant, who relieved starter Jill Vondrak, was lifted in favor of Walczak. The Game One winner coaxed an infield pop-up and fanned the next two hitters to preserve the win and pick up her second save of the season.
Bryant was the winner and moved her record to 4-3.
Live stats of Sunday's crucial double header will be available, as they are for all home games.
