Rehan Mahmood led a group of four consecutive UW-Parkside runners as the men's cross country team claimed the 2011 Lucian Rosa Invitational on Saturday. The Rangers had five top ten finishers on the day as the team was able to defend its Invite title.

“We really just wanted to get a great workout out of the day,” said head coach Micah VanDenend. “We tried to group up a little more and really get ready for next week (in Oshkosh).”

The Rangers grouping led to eight runners finishing in spots four through 21. Mahmood led the way with a time of 26:47 to finish fourth. Evan Lewandowski was fifth (26:58), Ron Hedman sixth (27:02), and Tom Hedman seventh (27:06). Josh Mulloy rounded out the top ten at 27:16.

Jordan Theiler (15th), Jesus Escareno (16th), and Kyle Young (21st) also finished near the front of the pabk.
“We're pretty close to what we were doing last year at this time,” said VanDenend. “Jesus was in there today competing for the first time this year. He's been training great and I've got no doubt he's among our top guys by regional. That's going to be a big boost for us at the right time.”

The Rangers will now head to Oshkosh next weekend in preparation for the conference championships in two weeks at Southern Indiana. The regional meet follows that on Nov. 5.

“We're a month away from the region and that's really what we're focusing on,” said VanDenend. “We feel like we certainly should be fighting for one of those top three spots at the GLVC in a couple weeks.”
