The move was originally announced in September of 2017 when Chancellor Deborah L. Ford and Director of Athletics Andrew Gavin accepted an invitation from GLIAC Commissioner Kris Dunbar and Dr. Donald Bachand, the President of Saginaw Valley State University and the chair of the GLIAC's Presidents Council.
