EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Senior
Jake Verhagen hit seven three-pointers and scored a career-high 26 points leading Wisconsin-Parkside to a 97-82 victory over Indianapolis in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday in the Ford Center.
With the win, Wisconsin-Parkside advances to the semifinals of the tournament for the fifth straight season where it will meet top-seeded Bellarmine on Saturday (March 4) at 12 p.m.
Verhagen finished the game 9-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-12 from the three-point line to eclipse his previous career high of 21 points scored against Lewis on Jan. 18, 2016. He also added five rebounds and one steal.
Junior
Kendale McCullum scored 19 points and added nine assists, four steals and four rebounds. With his 19 points, McCullum became the 22nd player in school history to score 1,000 career points. He now has scored 1,005 points in his Wisconsin-Parkside career.
The Rangers, who improved to 22-6 on the season, also received 15 points and seven rebounds from
Goran Zagorac and 11 points and five rebounds from senior
Alexander Brown.
"We've gotten off to slow starts in several of our last games," said head coach
Luke Reigel. "We've had problems finding a rhythm early in games. Once we've found the rhythm, we've had success. We hit some three's early in the game and that got us off and running."
Wisconsin-Parkside shot 60.4 percent from the floor, including 70.4 percent in the second half, in the win. The Rangers also shot 52.0 percent from the three-point line and made 7-of-10 from beyond the arc in the second half.
"When we are patient on the offensive end that makes all the difference in the world for us," Reigel added. "When we run our offense for 20 seconds we end up getting quality shots. Anybody can play defense for 10 seconds, but when we work the shot clock and make the other team work on the defensive end of the floor is when we have the most success."
Indianapolis, which ended its season with a 16-12 overall record, was led by Ajay Lawton who scored 20 points. Jesse Kempson finished with 18 points and Jimmy King added 17 points for the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 9-1 lead and held a 17-8 advantage before the Rangers rallied.
Verhagen hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark an 8-0 run, which brought Wisconsin-Parkside to within 17-16 with 13:48 to play in the opening half.
A jumper by King upped the lead to 19-16, but two free throws by
Joe Borcia and a layup by Zagorac gave the Rangers the lead for the first time at 20-19 with 10:52 to play before halftime.
The Greyhounds regained the lead on a layup by Lawton at the 10:07 mark of the opening half and held a 32-31 lead before the Rangers used a late first-half run to take the lead for good.
Four straight free throws by McCullum and a layup by Brown gave Wisconsin-Parkside a 37-32 lead with 2:50 remaining before halftime.
Indianapolis sandwiched a Brown layup around free throws from Micah Rosser and Roderick Davis to cut the lead to 39-34, but Brown drilled a three-pointer with 33 seconds to play in the first half giving Wisconsin-Parkside a 42-34 lead at the intermission.
After Kempson opened the second half with two free throws, Wisconsin-Parkside answered with back-to-back three-pointers from McCullum and
Kyle Flanagan to take a 48-36 lead with 17:45 to play in the game.
Wisconsin-Parkside built the lead to as many as 13 points midway through the second half before Indianapolis rallied. Trailing 71-58 with 7:53 to play, the Greyhounds put together a 10-3 run to climb to within 74-68 with 4:39 left in the game.
Verhagen then sparked a 16-8 run by hitting four three-pointers which gave the Rangers a 90-76 lead with 1:55 to play in the game.
Verhagen gave the Rangers their largest lead of the game at 95-76 when he dunked on a fast break and made the free throw after being fouled to seal the win.
Wisconsin-Parkside and Bellarmine met only once during the regular season and the Knights posted an 82-62 victory in Louisville. Bellarmine shot 61.5 percent from the floor in the first half and raced out to a 47-32 lead at halftime on its way to the win. Brown led the Rangers with 17 points, while Flanagan added 16 points.
