KANSAS CITY -- Sophomore
Lauren Boerger scored 18 points, but Rockhurst built an 18-point lead in the first quarter on its way to an 82-65 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Sunday in Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which concluded the season with a 10-17 overall record, outscored the Hawks 58-57 over the final three quarters of the game but could not overcome the early deficit. Rockhurst improved to 18-9 on the season and advances to the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament.
Boerger was 6-of-15 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the free throw line to lead the Rangers. She also had four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Boerger finished the season strong for the Rangers as she topped the team in scoring in each of the last three games and averaged 16.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game during that span.
Senior
Brittney Fair, who played her final game in a Wisconsin-Parkside uniform, scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Shelby Cheston and
Blair Arthur each finished with 10 points for the Rangers.
Rockhurst was led by Mary Dineen who poured in 26 points, while Marisa Lowe finished with 21 points and eight rebounds. Morgan Harwood scored 15 points and collected six rebounds for the Hawks.
Rockhurst took control of the game midway through the first quarter with an 11-0 run that gave the Hawks a 16-5 lead with 3:30 to play in the opening quarter. Chester scored inside for the Rangers to cut the lead to 16-7, but Rockhurst ended the period with three straight three-pointers to take a 25-7 lead after one.
Wisconsin-Parkside trailed 32-16 at the midway point of the second quarter before fighting back into the game.
Carolina Rahkonen began the run with a free throw and a jumper by Fair cut the lead to 32-19 with 4:15 to play before halftime.
A layup by Arthur and a jumper by Boerger brought the Rangers to within 32-23 at the 2:30 mark of the second quarter. Arthur then capped the 10-0 run with a three-pointer that trimmed the Rockhurst lead to 32-26 with 2:08 to play before halftime.
The Hawks took a 34-26 lead into the intermission when Harwood knocked down a jumper with 1:41 to play in the second quarter.
Trailing 36-28, Wisconsin-Parkside got a layup by Cheston and a pair of free throws by Boerger to climb to within 36-32 with 7:13 to play in the third quarter, but that would be as close as the Rangers would get for the remainder of the game.
Rockhurst responded back-to-back three-pointers to up the lead to 42-32 with 6:21 to play in the third. A layup by Lowe at the 3:00 mark of the third quarter gave the Hawks a 47-36 advantage and Rockhurst would not lead by less than 10 points the rest of the way.
The Hawks took their largest lead of the game at 82-61 when Dineen made two free throws with 51 seconds left to play.
