EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Mar. 8, 2014)-- The 19th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team was unable to keep pace with red-hot Bellarmine University on Saturday night inside the Ford Center, falling 90-78 in the semifinals of the 2014 Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
The Knights (23-6) shot an impressive 60 percent (33-for-55) from the floor while outrebounding the nationally-ranked Rangers (23-6) by a 41-29 margin.
Bellarmine seized an early 11-4 lead just six minutes into the game. UW-Parkside crawled back, utilizing a 15-4 run to secure a four-point cushion with 9:38 left in the opening stanza. The Knights surged back into the game and built a 10-point buffer with 1:49 left before halftime but Parkside managed to knife the gap to just 41-36 at the break after
Jimmy Gavin hit a layup at the buzzer.
The Rangers pulled within two early in the second half before Bellarmine started pulling away, opening up a 12-point cushion with 12:19 left. BU maintained at least a six-point buffer the rest of the way en route to the 12-point win.
Zygimantas Riauka led the Rangers with 22 points and 12 boards along with two blocks and three steals while Gavin collected 20 points off the bench.
Colt Grandstaff and
Jordan Mach each chipped in 12 points with
Andy Mazurczak contributing nine points.
Jake Thelen led the Knights with 27 points and 11 boards while Vance Hall added 23 and 10. Keiston Jones tallied 15 points with Josh Derksen netting 13 off the bench.
The Rangers will be limbo until 9:30 p.m. on Sunday when they learn their NCAA Division II Tournament fate in a live broadcast of the 2014 bracket on NCAA.com.
