QUINCY, Ill. (Nov. 8, 2013)-- Niekie Pellens provided the game-winner in the 98th minute, helping the third-seeded University of Wisconsin-Parkside rally past second-seeded Truman State University 2-1 on Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament at Quincy University's Legends Stadium.
The victory advances UW-Parkside (13-3-3) to the GLVC Championship Game for the first time since winning the league crown in 2010. The Rangers will face the winner of the Quincy University-Rockhurst University match to be played at 5 p.m. today.
A header goal from Alexis Heffernan in the 11th minute gave the 20th-ranked Bulldogs (12-4-4) the early lead. Truman State enjoyed the 1-0 lead at the halftime intermission despite the Rangers holding a 4-3 edge in shots on frame.
The Rangers tallied the equalizer in the 87th minute with
Alex Johnson beating the keeper with a blast to the lower right corner off a feed from
Kaela Hoecherl. The goal was Johnson's third of the season and her second goal in as many games. In overtime, Pellens emerged as the hero, securing the game-winner with a blast to the upper left corner of the net from 30 yards out. The goal was Pellens' second game-winner of the season while
Jasmine Espino tallied the assist, her fourth of 2013.
Mallory Geurts made five saves to pick up the win in goal, logging all 98 minutes while her counterpart Emily Bozdeck suffered the loss, yielding two goals and making six saves.
UW-P, winners of three straight and unbeaten in its last four games (3-0-1), finished the contest with a 16-14 edge in shots, including both shots in the sudden-death overtime session. The Rangers additionally owned a 7-5 edge in shots on frame.
The Rangers will return to Legends Stadium for the GLVC Championship match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
