SOMERS, Wis. (Nov. 3, 2013)-- Alex Johnson provided the lone score of the afternoon on Sunday at Wood Road Field as the third-seeded University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer squad opened up the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament with a 1-0 victory over sixth-seeded Drury University.
Johnson's game-winner came in the 37th minute of play as the senior uncorked a blast from 35 yards out to beat the keeper. The goal was Johnson's second of the season and her first career game-winner.
The win advances UW-Parkside (12-3-3) to the GLVC Semifinals on Friday in Quincy, Ill. The Rangers will face second-seed Truman State University after the Bulldogs downed seventh-seed William Jewell College 2-1.
The Rangers dominated the opening 45 minutes of play, enjoying a 1-0 lead at the break after outshooting the visiting Panthers (9-6-4) by a 9-2 margin. UW-P finished the game with a 17-8 advantage in shots while Drury owned a slim 4-3 edge in shots on frame.
UW-Parkside had two great chances for an insurance goal in the second half, with a
Kaela Hoecherl shot on a breakaway sailing high while a
Stephanie Barsuli blast bounced off the goalpost.
Goalkeeper
Mallory Geurts tallied three saves to collect her second straight clean sheet and 10th shutout of the season. Her counterpart, Kelsey Vaught, made four saves on the day.
The win upped the Rangers record at home to 10-0 on the season and improved UW-Parkside's record to 33-1-4 over the last 38 games at Wood Road Field.
