SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 21, 2012)-- Members of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball team volunteered at the American Cancer Society's 2012 Relay for Life of Kenosha event hosted on campus at the outdoor track last month, providing support for the annual event raising funds for cancer research.
The overnight relay-style fundraiser has participants form teams with team members taking turns walking around the track for the duration of the event in an effort to raise funds for cancer research through the American Cancer Society. Since its inception, the Kenosha Relay has raised over $4 million toward eradicating cancer. Opening ceremonies began at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 3 and wrapped up at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 4.
The Rangers volleyball squad helped out during the relay with Johnson Financial Group, working the volleyball courts for fans and participants to use in between laps.
In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation's biggest health concern – cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising more than $4 billion to fight cancer.
UW-Parkside (8-3, 1-2 GLVC) hosts the University of Southern Indiana tonight at 7 p.m. inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
