Rensselaer, Ind. – The UW-Parkside baseball held a late lead but wasn't able to hang on as Saint Joseph's came from behind for a 5-4 win in the finale of a four-game series in Indiana. That win gave the Pumas the sweep after a 7-2 victory in the opener on Saturday.
Parkside built a 4-0 lead heading into the seventh before Saint Joe's came back. The home team also scored five runs in their final three at-bats of the opener.
The Rangers will be back at home next week for five games beginning with a nine-inning contest against Cardinal Stritch University on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. They'll finish the week with a pair of doubleheaders against the University of Southern Indiana on Saturday and Sunday.
Game One (
Box Score)
Parkside was limited to just two hits in the opener but used both in the fourth inning to tie up the game.
The Pumas scored a pair in the second on a double and sac fly. After the first ten Rangers were retired, the offense got going to even the score.
Chris Glynn and
Taylor Nehls were both hit by pitches to put two on base to get things started.
Tyler Gieseking followed that with a single to load the bases.
Cody Gilles came up next and he delivered with a double down the left field line. That scored both Glynn and Nehls to make it 2-2.
But the Pumas answered quickly, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning and two more in the fifth. That chased
Ryan Windt and opened a 6-2 cushion. They added another in the sixth to make it 7-2.
Jordan Peterson finished the game striking out the final five Ranger hitters to complete the two-hitter.
Game Two (
Box Score)
Parkside got on the board immediately in the second game to take an early lead.
John Brennan singled to start the game and was bunted to second by
Corey Stonelake. Nehls cashed him in with a double to left to make it 1-0.
It moved to 2-0 in the fifth when the same players combined for another run. Brennan was hit and then stole second with one out. After a fly out, Nehls contributed another double to score Brennan.
Jacob Chandler kept the Pumas scoreless allowing the Rangers to add to the lead in the sixth. Gilles doubled to start it and scored when a hit by Glynn was thrown away. He would also score two batters later when
Brad Weatherman reached on a error.
The Pumas scored one in the seventh before tying it in the eighth with three more runs. Three hits, a walk, an error, and a hit batter built the Saint Joe's rally.
The Rangers put two on in the top of the ninth but a comebacker ended the threat.
Saint Joseph's finished it with a walk-off single in the ninth. Joe Sturino's one-out hit to right brought home Jack Teah to end the game.
Brennan, Nehls, and Glynn each had two hits with Nehls driving in two. The Rangers left nine on-base in the contest.
Chandler got a no-decision going seven innings and allowing three runs. He struck out nine and walked two.
