Rensselaer, Ind. – The UW-Parkside baseball team came up short on both ends of a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College on Friday afternoon. The Pumas used a five-run inning to win game one, 5-4. They followed that up with a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.
The Rangers left seven on base in the game one defeat. They were limited just four hits in the game two in falling to 11-17 on the 2012 campaign.
The two teams will battle again tomorrow in Indiana. First pitch for the opener of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
Game One (
Box Score)
The Rangers jumped out to a three run lead early on scoring one in the second and two more in the third.
Taylor Nehls scored the initial run on an RBI-hit by
Kirk Haviland in the second.
Mike Anderson increased the lead to three when he tripled in the top of the third. That scored
Chris Glynn and
Cody Gilles who had both singled to start the rally.
The Pumas got all their runs in the third against
Mike Nicks. They came up with four straight hits after the first batter of the inning was hit by a pitch. The big blow was a three-run home run to make it 5-3.
Gilles got one of the runs back in the eighth on his fifth home run of the year. That made it 5-4 with one at-bat left.
The Rangers put the lead-off man on in the ninth but couldn't move him into scoring position. The Pumas got three straight outs to escape with the win.
Gilles and Nehls led the offense with two hits each. Gilles also scored twice.
Game Two (
Box Score)
In the finale of the doubleheader the Rangers were unable to put a sustained rally together, only getting multiple runners on in the first inning. They had a baserunner in all but one inning but left just two in scoring position.
The best chance may have been in the third when
John Brennan doubled with one away. He moved to third on a bunt by
Corey Stonelake but was stranded there.
In the meantime, the Pumas chipped away at
Andy Stochl who pitched solid in defeat. They scored single runs in the first, fifth, and sixth but finished with just six hits in the game.
Stochl went all six innings allowing two earned runs while walking three.
The two teams will meet again Saturday to wrap up the four-game set. Parkside will be back at home on Tuesday to take on Cardinal Stritch University in a single, nine-inning game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
