Northern Kentucky and UW-Parkside came into Saturday afternoon's women's basketball clash with identical 12-3 records overall and 6-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. When the final buzzer sounded, the Rangers were a game up after a 44-36 decision in the DeSimone Gymnasium.
It was a defensive, physical contest, with double digit blocked shots (seven for the Rangers). The Rangers held the Norse to just 23 percent shooting from the floor for the game.
The Norse led briefly, at 5-4 early, but that was the only lead for the visitors. The Rangers held a 25-17 lead at halftime and saw their lead balloon to its high mark at 11, 5 minutes into the second half.
Northern Kentucky threatened late, chopping the score down to 38-34 with 3:12 to go in the game. The Rangers then scored the next six points, capped by a driving layup down the lane by Jadee Rooney with 1:10 to go in the game, giving the Rangers a 10-point gap.
Amy Selk logged a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Rooney tallied 11 points.
Casse Mogan paced the Norse in points with 14.
The 44 points scored by the Rangers was their low mark this season. The 36 they gave up was their second best defensive effort of 2010-11. The squad limited Rockhurst to just 34 points earlier this season.

The Rangers will travel to Springfield, Missouri, for their next contest. The team will tangle with Drury at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17.
