The UW-Parkside baseball team opened its home season with temperatures in the 30s and a howling north wind. The adverse conditions didn't bother UW-Parkside pitcher Josh Hudnut, who flirted with a no-hitter and shut down visiting Upper Iowa, 5-1.
The first hit Hudnut gave up was a wind blown double in the sixth inning, which likely would have been a routine out on another day. The other two hits the Peacocks managed was a infield dribbler and a base hit through the right side.
Hudnut struck out four and did not walk a batter.
The Rangers plated two in the second inning and added single runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth.
The home team ran wild, stealing six bases in as many attempts.
Dave Watson had a big day, going 3-3 with three stolen bases.
The bottom three batters in the Ranger order accounted for all the RBI. Ben Korman, the seven-hole hitter, chased a run while the eight-nine hitters, Brad Liermann and Eric Ackerman, plated a pair apiece.
The win by the Rangers equals their win total from all of last year. The team is now 6-15. The Peacocks dropped to 3-8.
The Rangers will host Lewis is a four game series beginning Saturday at noon.
