The UW-Parkside women's basketball team made its second appearance ever in the NCAA tournament Saturday afternoon. The No. 4-seeded Rangers took on the No. 5 seed in the Midwest Region, Findlay, in Houghton, Michigan. As you would expect from a 4-5 game, it was tight throughout, but when the final horn sounded, in was the Oilers which posted a 54-51 victory, moving to the semi-finals.
The loss left the Rangers with a 23-8 overall record. The win total is a new school record for women's basketball.
Findlay upped its mark to 22-8.
The Rangers had the final possession of the game. With 4.2 seconds left on the clock, Parkside called a timeout to set up a three-point shot, which came off the hands of Jadee Rooney. The shot was off the mark and Findlay preserved the win.
The Oilers had the biggest lead of the afternoon at 42-34 with 10:25 to play before the Rangers came roaring back. Parkside went on a 6-0 run on a layup by Brittany Hogen, a jumper by Amy Selk and a jumper by Brittany Beyer to forge back within two at 42-40 with 8:36 left.
Beyer's backdoor, over the shoulder, layup with 5:20 to go allowed the Rangers to knot the score at 44 apiece.
After falling behind be three, the resilient Rangers tied the game up again, this time at 47-47 on a basket-and-one by Hogen with 4:55 left. The deadlock was one of seven in the game
The teams traded points until Findlay's Laura Bardall knocked down a 15-footer with 1:25 to play. Megan Sellers tacked on a free throw on Findlay's next possession to put her team up, 54-51, with 10 seconds left, setting up the final possession.
Hogen led the Rangers in scoring and rebounding with her 12th double-double of the season. She poured in 18 points to go with 14 rebounds.
Rooney scored 13 points and Beyer chipped in 10.
Each team was solid on the defensive end. The Oilers, who will go on to play host Michigan Tech Sunday, shot just 36 percent from the floor. Parkside was held to 33 percent shooting.
The Rangers out-rebouded their foes, 45-37.
The game ended a remarkable career by Parkside senior Amanda Gibson. She scored six points in the game and ended with 1,336 for her career, which ranks No. 3 on the all-time UW-Parkside scoring list.
