The UW-Parkside wrestling team scored five individual regional champions out of the 10 weight classes at the Super 2 Regional Tournament held in Warrensburg, Missouri, Sunday. Two more earned a trip to the national tournament as a result of finishing in the top four in their weight class.
As a team, UW-Parkside finished second to the nation's No. 1 ranked team Nebraska-Omaha. Parkside came up with 138 team points, a fair distance behind Nebraska-Omaha's 166. Nine teams participated in the regional.
Regional champs from UW-Parkside included Cody Zimmerman (125), Craig Becker (149), Dillion Bera (157), Luke Rynish (174) and Luke Haag (184). Joining the quintet at nationals in Omaha March 12-13 will be Matt Gille, who was third at 165 and Jon Treml, who was third at 197.
Season records for the newly crowned Ranger region champions include Zimmerman, 31-5; Becker, 34-2; Bera, 29-10; Rynish, 35-10; and Haag, 43-9.
Nebraska-Omaha wrestlers championed the five weight classes in which a Ranger did not win. UNO will send all 10 of its grapplers to nationals.
UW-Parkside head coach Jim Koch, who has guided his team to a No. 4 ranking in the nation, was named Super Regional 2 Coach of the Year.
