The UW-Parkside women's basketball team is back in first place, all alone, after beating Lewis, 72-69.

The Flyers had beaten the Rangers in Romeoville, Illinois, just  5 days earlier to forge a first place tie in the North Division of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rangers returned the favor in the DeSimone Gymnasium and now lead by one game with three left to play. The winner of the division will get a first round bye and will host a second round game at the end of the month.

Parkside started the game scoring eight of the first 10 points. The Flyers roared back with an 11-0 run. The teams then traded buckets for the rest of the half which saw Lewis on top, 36-32, at intermission.

Jadee Rooney, who was held off the scoresheet in the first half, came up big in crunch time. She made a nice move underneath and scored with 7:54 left in the game to give the Rangers their largest lead at the time, 56-49. On the next possession, Rooney drove down under again, tossing the ball off the glass with the left hand extending the lead.

Lewis whittled the gap down to 68-64 late in the game, but only got one point closer on a 30-footer with time expiring.

GLVC Player of the Week Jenny Turpel scored 24 points for the Flyers before fouling out with 20 seconds left in the game.

Brittany Hogen registered another double-double for the Rangers with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Amy Selk shined off the bench with 14 points and five rebounds.

The game was televised by Time-Warner Cable. For replay times see: http://www.parksiderangers.com/news/2010/2/8/MBB_0208100341.aspx

The Rangers will be at Quincy Monday, Feb. 15, at 5:15 p.m.
