UW-Parkside and Robert Morris played a non-conference women's basketball game in the DeSimone Gymnasium Wednesday evening. The lead changed hands 12 times, but in the end, the Rangers prevailed, 70-58.
The Rangers are now 6-1 overall, while the Eagles are 9-4.
UW-Parkside led by as many as seven points in the first half when Cheryl Leyns freed herself underneath for a hoop and an 18-11 lead 10 minutes into the session. Robert Morris reeled the Rangers in and captured a 22-21 advantage just 5 minutes later. Robert Morris led, 31-30 at halftime.
Robert Morris jumped to a 47-39 lead, its biggest of the game, with 12:09 to go in the contest. From there, the Rangers went to work.
Parkside pulled even at 54-54 on a pair of free throws by Brittany Hogen with 6 minutes left. Hogen came back on the next possession, nailing two more free throws, for a lead the Rangers would never relinquish.
Later, Jadee Rooney knocked down a three-point shot for a 61-56 lead. Then, on back-to-back possessions, Hogen and Rooney scored underneath to open a nine-point gap. The dagger was dealt when Jaleesa Trussel knocked down a three-pointer from the corner with 1:15 left, which turned out to be the final points of the game for either side.
Hogen led the Rangers with 18 points, despite having only one bucket in the first half. Rooney chipped in 16 points to the winning cause. Amy Selk and Brittany Beyer logged 10 points apiece.
Second half shooting was key as the Rangers made good on 52 percent of their shots from the floor and the Eagles were limited to 26 percent shooting.
UW-Parkside will hit the road for its next game. The team will take on the Wildcats of Northern Michigan University in an in-region contest in Marquette, Michigan. The Wildcats will bring a 4-3 record into the game. The Rangers and the Wildcats have played one common opponent this season, Concordia-St. Paul. Northern Michigan defeated CSP, 72-68 in overtime in St. Paul, while the Rangers edged the Golden Bears, 77-74, in the DeSimone Gymnasium.
