The UW-Parkside men's golf team got off to a slow start and worked its way up to 11th place out of 24 teams at the Great Lakes Region Invite #1. The Rangers carded a 303 on Day 1 and then improved to 290 in the second round for a total team score of 593.

The event was played in South Haven, Michigan. The course is a par 72, 7003-yard layout.

Wayne State (Mich.) was the team winner with a total score of 573. Ferris State was next best at 576. The Rangers were only four stokes off of ninth place.

"Next week, we need to leave our shovels home because we kept digging a hole that's too deep," said UW-Parkside coach Mark Olson. "Even though we came back strong in the final round, we were too far back to have a good performance make a difference."

Only two teams shot lower than the Rangers in the final round.

Parkside was paced by Mike Keller, who finished sixth overall with 73-70=143. Other Rangers scores were Bob Tierney, 77-71=148; Keith Buntrock, 77-73=150; Andy Hansen, 76-76=152; and Jake Knuese, 79-76=155.

Next up for the linksters is the NCAA Division II Preview Tournament. It will be held at the site of the spring 2010 national championship at the Sagamore Club in Nobelsville, Indiana.
