A trio of NCAA Division I teams headed the pack in the women’s field at the annual Midwest Open. The meet has been run every year at the Wayne Dannehl National Cross Country course since 1979.
Louisville and West Virginia tied for the top spot with 43 points apiece. Marquette was next best with 47. Host UW-Parkside came in 11th place with a 302. A total of 17 teams competed from all three NCAA divisions, NAIA and one junior college.
The top individual finisher was Clara Grandt of West Virginia. She led throughout the race and was clocked for the 5K in 17 minute flat. The next three finishers were all from Louisville and included Tarah McKay (17:19), Kim Grieshaber (17:47) and Emily Borsare (17:59).
UW-Parkside’s top runner was Whitney Olson who was 54th overall in a time of 19:42.
“The team did an excellent job of running together which is what we were really looking for,” said UW-Parkside coach Mike DeWitt. “We had seven runners within 36 seconds of each other and that’s excellent. Plus, four of those runners are freshmen and this was our first meet.”
A total of 175 runners finished the race on a partly cloudy day which saw its race-time temperature at 70 degrees.
Rounding out the Ranger top five were Jennie Kindt 67th, 20:01; Danielle Dietz, 70th, 20:07; Julia Berstein, 77th, 20:11; and Brittany Loza, 80th, 20:14.
“We finished about where I thought we would,” said DeWitt.
