A pair of Big East schools were atop the pack at UW-Parkside Midwest Open Saturday afternoon. The annual cross country event was held at the Wayne Dannehl National Cross Country course on the campus of UW-Parkside.
Louisville won the meet with a low team score of 17. Marquette was a distant second with 74. Host UW-Parkside finished ninth out of 15 teams with a 246 count.
The individual winner was Matt Bruce of Louisville who was clocked in 24:26 for the 8K course. He was followed to the finish line by three of his teammates including Cory Thorne, 24:40; matt Hughes, 24:45 and early leader Michael Eaton, 25:01.
UW-Parkside’s top finisher was Ben Orvold, who completed the course in 25:54. His time was good for 12th place overall out of 146 finishers.
“Ben was on his own early and ran a good race,” cited UW-Parkside coach Mike DeWitt. “The rest of the guys stuck together in the first half of the race, then broke up into a couple of different packs.”
Rounding out the Ranger top five were Alex Mena, 42nd, 27:00; Matt Vidas, 67th, 27:43; Dustin Baldwin, 68th, 27:44; and Phil Simac, 82nd, 20:03.
“It was a good effort for us,” said DeWitt. “Very solid for the first meet of the year.”
