UW-Parkside’s Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course served as the host to this year’s NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. The women’s 6K and men’s 10K races were held under sunny skies and temperatures in the 60-degree range.
The top three teams in both the women’s and men’s race qualify for NCAA II nationals in Evansville, Indiana, Saturday, Nov. 21. In addition, the top two individual finishers who are not a part of those teams qualify.
No UW-Parkside athletes qualified for nationals for the first time since 2003.
On the men’s side, UW-Parkside’s Ben Orvold earned all-region honors which go to the top 15 runners. Orvold, a sophomore from Sussex, Wisconsin, crossed the line in 33:16, which was good for 14th place.
The individual winner was Tyler Emmorey of Grand Valley State. He was clocked in 32:22.
Grand Valley State won the team title with a low score of 38. Saginaw Valley State was a distant second with 88, followed by the final national qualifier, Southern Indiana, with 90.
UW-Parkside finished in 13th place out of 19 competing teams.
“Ben did a nice job to earn an all-region award,” cited UW-Parkside coach Mike DeWitt. “Our guys had a good, solid team effort. Our goal was to keep our score under 330 and we were right at that with our 329.”
Other Ranger scorers places and times were Dustin Baldwin, 61st, 35:23; Alex Mena, 81st, 36:14; Matt Vidas, 82nd, 36:20; and Phil Simac, 91st, 36:36.
Grand Valley State also was crowed the women’s champion. The Laker women had a low team score of 26, with all five of their scorers finishing in the top eight. Southern Indiana was second with 76 and Ferris State qualified for nationals with a 103.
The Rangers finished in 14th place with a 361.
The winning pace was set by Ferris State’s Christina Muir at 21:34.
“Our girls did their best job of the year,” commented DeWitt. “Our top five scorers were in the range we were looking for.”
Ranger places and times were Whitney Olson, 55th, 24:11; Brittany Frederick, 70th, 24:33; Jessica Watychowicz, 71st, 24:34; Jennie Kindt, 80th, 24:47; and Jessica Enderby, 85th, 24:59.
