The Ranger women's basketball team led by 11 points midway through the first half against Winona State. With momentum wearing a Warrior uniform and the score tied at 66-66, UW-Parkside's Jadee Rooney did something about it.
The sophomore guard swished her fifth three-point shot of the game with just 22 ticks left on the clock. A sturdy defensive stand followed by a pair of free throws by Amanda Gibson with 3 seconds left gave the Rangers a 71-66 victory. The non-conference match was part of the Wildwood Lodge Tipoff Classic hosted by Concordia St. Paul. The game was a Friday matinee.
Rooney led all scorers with 17 points. Three of her teammates also dented double digits. Brittany Hogen logged 14 points, while Brittany Beyer and Gibson put 13 in the book. Gibson now has 987 points in her career and will look to break into the 1,000-point club in the Rangers' next outing against Concordia St. Paul Saturday, at 3 p.m.
Natalie Gigler led a quartet of Warriors in double digit scoring with 14 points.
Winona State's only lead of the game was at 3-0. The Rangers led, 20-10, then saw the Warriors charge back to knot the score at 25-25. Parkside forged ahead at 38-32 at halftime.
"This is fun because it is two good teams going at it," said UW-Parkside assistant coach Brad Fischer on the broadcast at halfime.
The Rangers are 2-0 with wins over two solid opponents (Florida Southern in the opener).
The Warriors won the battle of the boards, 31-29. The team shot 49 percent from the floor. The Rangers made good on 48 percent of their shots.
