The UW-Parkside women's basketball team has a pair of NCAA Division I opponents on the road on its pre-season schedule. Both opponents are from the Horizon League.
The first encounter went Parkside's way, as the Rangers pulled off a 57-56 victory at UW-Milwaukee Sunday afternoon.
Jadee Rooney came up with the late-game heroics. With 4 seconds left, after a time-out, Rooney drove into the lane and put up a short jumper to win it.
Parkside led by as many as eight points at 52-50 with 11:16 left in the game; however, the Panthers charged back, to grab a 51-50 lead less than 3 minutes later. The lead then see-sawed until the very end.
UW-Milwaukee led throughout most of the first half and held a 32-28 advantage at intermission.
Brittany Hogen was the Rangers' leading scorer with 17 points. Rooney jumped into double digits at the final buzzer, totaling 11.
Amy Selk had a big day underneath, ripping down 11 rebounds.
The Rangers shot 42 percent from the field while limiting their neighbors to the north to 35 percent.
Next up is a pre-season game at UW-Green Bay Saturday, Nov. 7, at noon. The Phoenix were undefeated in Horizon League play last season and were participants in the NCAA tournament. The squad is the favorite to repeat in the league's pre-season poll. UWM was tabbed for fifth in the 10-team circuit.
The regular season opens up, at home, Sunday, Nov. 15. Florida Southern will pay a visit to the DeSimone Gymnasium for a 2:00 p.m. game.
