Nine teams competed at the Illinois-Springfield Invite and when each squad turned in their cards, it was revealed that UW-Parkside had the low score and was crowned champion. The Rangers shot a team score of 293 for the first 18 holes and a carded a 288 in the second round for a total team score of 581, which was eight strokes better than second place Drury.
Andy Hansen and
Andrew Troyanek were Parkside's low men. Hansen's rounds were 75-70=145 and Troyanek shot 71-74=145. The Ranger duo tied for fourth overall. Matthew Rau of Missouri-St. Louis was the medalist with a 67-75=142.
"We finally put together two good rounds and came away with a victory," said UW-Parkside coach
Mark Olsen. "The 16th hole, a very difficult par three, was a key to determining the winning team. In round one, that hole killed us."
The Rangers were down by six strokes to Drury and Missouri-St. Louis after the completion of round one. The team handled No. 16 with a one-over-par for the five golfers and finished play with an even par total.
Rangers
Bob Tierney (76-71=147) and
Keith Buntrock (74-73=147) tied for ninth place, while
Mike Keller was 22nd (73-80=153).
The team will journey to the other side of the lake to compete in the Wayne State Invitational Sunday-Monday, Oct. 11-12.
