vs. Urbana vs. Tiffin vs. Findlay
The annual GLVC-GLIAC crossover volleyball tournament was hosted by the GLIAC this season, at Aim High Complex in Lansing, Michigan. Three schools were added to the GLIAC ledger to balance out the 15 GLVC schools. Each competing squad had three scheduled matches.
Despite the fact the schools from the GLIAC won the majority of the matches, the Rangers did their part. Parkside beat the two GLIAC schools it faced and then topped an added school for a clean three-match sweep.
UW-Parkside got off to a strong start by beating one of those added schools. The Rangers swept Urbana, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20, Friday afternoon. The Ranger win dropped Urbana below the .500 mark and is now 12-13. UWP brings a 16-8 mark into Saturday's action.
Shannon Curtis notched three serving aces in the brief match against Urbana. Jen Johnson put down nine kills while Andrea Gust dished out 39 assists.
The Rangers hit for a .154 percentage as a team while limiting Urbana to just .067.
The team took on the GLIAC in two matches on Saturday. Both went the Rangers' way with a 27-25, 25-20, 22-25, 24-26, 15-8 win over Tiffin, followed up with a 27-25, 21-25, 31-29, 25-12 encore over Findlay.
Gust had an astounding 65 assists in the win over Tiffin. Caroline Langer had five of the Rangers' nine serving aces while putting down 16 kills. Tami Gleason and Johnson logged 14 kills apiece.
In the deciding fifth set, Parkside hit for a sparkling .381 percentage while the Dragons were at an even .000.
In the Findlay match, Cassie Wilkens was the Ranger kill leader with 16.
The Rangers hit for a .306 mark in the match. Gust kept the assists going, this time with 37. She made the six-member all-tournament team for the GLVC.
Parkside left Lansing with an 18-8 record, which is the most matches abover .500 since the 1997 season when the team finished at 23-12.
Ranger fans will have an opportunity to check out their team Friday, Oct. 23, against Kentucky Wesleyan, starting at 7 p.m.
